An Interactive BioMap and Living Waters
With the help of MassGIS and the DFWELE GIS program, the BioMap
Core Habitats and Supporting Natural Landscape, as well as the Living Waters Core Habitats and Critical Supporting Watersheds, are now viewable
through an interactive mapping program.
To open the
BioMap program, click Here.
(A new window will open).
To open the Living Waters program, click Here.
If you haven't used this program before, you should read the introduction
below:
Navigating:
To navigate right to a town, you can use the drop-down menu on the
right-hand side of the map:
To move around within the map area you can use the following tools.
Clicking on the tool will activate it, so when you click inside
the map area the appropriate action will take place:
| To zoom in, click the magnifier: |
 |
-Clciking once will zoom in a little bit, or draw
a box around the area you want to zoom to. |
|
| To zoom out, click this tool: |
 |
-Clciking once will zoom out a little bit, or
draw a box to zoom out a proportional amount. |
|
| The hand tool will let you pan: |
 |
-Drag in the direction you want to display. |
|
| At any time, you can click the "full extent"
button: |
 |
and it will send you back to the original, statewide
scale. |
|
Scale:
At a smaller scale (farther away), you'll notice that only major
lakes, rivers, cities, and highways are visible. As you zoom in,
more detailed roads and protected open space will appear. As you
zoom further in, a digital topograhic map will appear in the background-
note that if you zoom too far in, the topo map will disappear.
Core Habitats:
When you use the "id tool", and click within a Core Habitat
polygon, a number will appear below the map area. It will always
be prefaced with a "BM" (e.g. BM154) for BioMap Cores, and an "LW" for Livng Waters Cores. This is a unique identifier
that the Natural Heritage Program uses to track information related
to each Core Habitat. Please use this number in conjunction with
the town BioMap and Living Waters Core Habitat summaries that we will be sending
out in the spring of 2004, or reference it when contacting the Program
for more information about a Core Habitat.
