MAGAZINE PHOTO CONTEST

"Bobcat" photo by Rachel BellenoitWe have long considered the publication of an issue of Massachusetts Wildlife devoted entirely to wildlife photography. Our readers frequently comment on the quality of the images that illustrate our modest publication. Some of the photos are provided by photographers free of charge, while the majority are the work of our very own master wildlife photographer, Bill Byrne. With so much variety and beauty at both the macro and micro levels, one need not travel far to get exceptional wildlife photographs. But we can't get them all so in 2010, magazine staff invited amateur photographers to share the most exceptional sights they have captured in Massachusetts. Eight categories were created for the contest: Birds, Fish, Flora, Herps (reptiles & amphibians), Invertebrates, Mammals, Outdoor Activities and Scenics.

The response to the contest was gratifying. 1,138 images were submitted by 183 contestants from 149 different communities across the Commonwealth. The entries were wonderful, reflecting excitement, awe, humor and wonder--all the features that make outdoor experiences so very special. These photographs bear testament that the Commonwealth is rich in both wildlife and in breathtaking moments.

Judging the images was a very difficult task as there were so many deserving photos! The Judges created an additional "Wild Card" category to recognize this fact and staff created yet another-"Editor's Picks"-for some of our favorites that didn't make the other cuts. The entire judging process took the better part of four days.

The final result of the photography contest can be found in the 2010 No. 4 issue. We did our best to reproduce the entries exactly as the originals and apologize in advance for any vagaries of scanning and print technology that may affect tint or visual impact.

First place images for each category have been posted on the DFW Flickr site.
