Sources of Lead-Free Tackle
The use of any lead fishing sinkers and lead jigs weighing less than 1 ounce is now prohibited in all inland waters (fresh water) of the Commonwealth. This law went into effect January 1, 2012.
A number of anglers have inquired about the availability of lead-free alternatives. MassWildlife staff called many retail stores in the state and conducted a search on the Internet and has invited businesses with lead free tackle to be added to the list below. Anglers and retailers may find the following information useful.
LEAD-FREE TACKLE AT STORES
Many stores in Massachusetts stock lead-free sinkers, weights, and split shot. Lead-free jigs and shad darts are also available. The national chain stores (Wal-Mart, Dicks Sporting Goods, BassPro, etc.) know about the new regulation and have non-lead tackle in stock or on order. The smaller independent stores are also aware of the ban. Some of these stores carry lead-free jigs, most others have them on order. Alternative materials include, but are not limited to glass, ceramic, and tungsten.
INTERNET SOURCES OF LEAD FREE JIGS & SHAD DARTS
Lead-free jigs and shad darts are also available from the Internet. MassWildlife staff found sites selling lead-free jigs and several sites selling lead-free shad darts.
