REGISTRATION INFORMATION

 

 

BOATS 14' OR OVER - DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

  1. Bill of Sale (name and address of seller).
  2. Title or, if vessel is documented with the Coast Guard, Termination of Documentation ("Deletion Letter") from the Coast Guard. This will indicate no outstanding mortgages on the vessel.
  3. Proof of payment of sales tax (ST-6, ST-6E, or Bill of Sale). Note: To pay your sales tax online, visit the Department of Revenue website at https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/WebFile/WSI/Public/WebForms/ST6/RecreationTaxDefault.aspx
  4. Pencil tracing of Hull ID number (serial number). ***
  5. Required fees - (See fee schedule below)
  6. Properly completed and signed application.

If the boat is purchased new from a registered boat dealer or department store, an original "Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin" (MSO) is required in lieu of title.

Please note the following:
  • When a boat is purchased from a private party, from a non-titled state, the previous owner's registration is required in lieu of title.
  • When purchasing a boat from the state of Rhode Island, the seller's signature on the Rhode Island title must be notarized.

 

 

 

 

BOATS UNDER 14' - DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:

  1. Bill of Sale (name and address of seller).
  2. Proof of payment of sales tax (ST-6, ST-6E, or Bill of Sale). Note: To pay your sales tax online, visit the Department of Revenue website at https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/WebFile/WSI/Public/WebForms/ST6/RecreationTaxDefault.aspx

  4. Required fees - (See fee schedule below)
  5. Properly completed and signed application.

If a new boat is purchased from a registered boat dealer or department store, a copy of the "Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin" (MSO) is required.  (See notes regarding MSOs below)

Note: *** If your boat was built prior to 1972, or does not have a proper 12 character Hull Identification Number (HIN), a boat inspection may be required.   When in doubt, please call one of our registration offices prior to submitting an application.

 
 
 

ATV/SNOWMOBILE - DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

  1. Bill of Sale (name and address of seller)
  2. Proof of payment of sales tax (ST-6, ST-6E, or Bill of Sale). Note: To pay your sales tax online, visit the Department of Revenue website at https://wfb.dor.state.ma.us/WebFile/WSI/Public/WebForms/ST6/RecreationTaxDefault.aspx
  3. Serial Number (ATV- 17 characters, found on the frame)
  4. Required fee-- (See fee schedule below)
  5. Properly completed and signed application.

If the ATV or snowmobile is purchased new, a copy of the "Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin" is required.

Note:

  • Sales tax is due on the 20th day of the following month from date of purchase.
  • Massachusetts sales tax is now payable online. To pay your sales tax online, visit the Department of Revenue website or call the Department of Revenue at (800) 392-6089.

If visiting any Registration office, please bring a check or money order made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

 
   
 

Notes Regarding the Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO)

Procedures covering partially completed or blank Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO) for new vessels under 14 feet.

If the MSO is blank or partially completed, customer must go back to dealer to complete and return with pencil tracing or digital picture that matches.

If the MSO is handwritten, customer must have pencil tracing or digital picture that matches.

If book MSO, customer must go back to dealer to complete and return with pencil tracing or digital picture that matches.

On all West Marine Vessels, a pencil tracing and/or digital picture is required, in addition to any MSO submitted—NO EXCEPTIONS.

The digital picture cannot be on a cell phone—we need to retain a copy.

The MSO form must match the vessel being registered. (EX: If the vessel being registered is a Boston Whaler, the customer cannot use a form from another manufacturer, such as a Sea Ray MSO form.)
