At an August 28th meeting of the Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine delegations of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Herring Section, the following measures were agreed upon for the sea herring fishery in Management Area 1A (see map below) through September 28th:

Directed commercial fishing is prohibited except during September 1st thru 3rd & September 15th & 16th. States will meet on September 24th to reassess days out measures to target no more than 2,000 mt for September landings of Area 1A herring thereby attempting to leave about 12,000 mt for the post-spawning period Area 1A fishery in October. During the closure days, vessels participating in other fisheries may retain an incidental catch of herring that does not exceed more than 2,000 lbs of herring per trip.

These actions retain the current Thursday through Sunday no-fishing days while adding additional days-out.
