THE DIVISION OF MARINE FISHERIES TO TAKE PUBLIC COMMENT ON
INCREASING THE SUMMER COMMERCIAL SCUP TRIP LIMITS
The Division of Marine Fisheries (MarineFisheries) is proposing to increase the commercial scup summer fishery trip limits for all gear types except fish weirs. The preferred option is to increase from 800 lbs to 1,500 lbs, however, suggestions for other trip limits may be considered. If adopted, the new trip limit will be effective on July 11, 2012, following a two-week public comment period and approval by the Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission [322 CMR 6.28(9)(d)].
As of May 31, 2012, Massachusetts has landed 17% of its 2,346,406 lb commercial scup quota. The proposed increase to the summer commercial fishery trip limits may provide greater harvest opportunities and better allow the commercial fishery to realize the 2012 commercial quota.
From today, June 26, 2012, through 12:00 PM (noon) on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, MarineFisheries will accept public comment on the proposed 1,500 lb daily commercial scup trip limit. The Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission will then vote by fax poll to approve this trip limit increase. A formal announcement on the 2012 summer scup trip limits will be made by 5:00 PM on July 10, 2012.
