AreaNav Overview :

AreaNav is a GIS\GPS navigation system that allows even non-expert users to visualize their location on a map and query a variety of GIS data layers for more information. Built originally for the Massachusetts Environmental Police, AreaNav provides a robust GIS with a simple interface, making it an important tool for use in the field.

As a reporting tool, AreaNav provides point and click capabilities that link a geographic location to field notes or to an organization's database. For the Environmental Police, AreaNav is designed to work in tandem with their Computer Aided Dispatch System, providing a real benefit to officer safety.

Feature List:

  • Scale-dependent viewing. AreaNav ensures that maps are always clear and easy to read by turning on or off layers or altering their symbology depending on the map scale.
  • Multiple Map Navigation tools. Users can choose from a variety of map navigation tools including Pan, Zoom, Zoom to UTM or Lat./Long. Coordinates (screen shot), Zoom to a Map Feature (e.g. Worcester County), and Zoom to a User- Defined Bookmark (screen shot).
  • GPS Synchronization. With the press of a button on the toolbar the user is able to see their location displayed in real time as a cross-hair on the map. Works with any GPS unit that supports the NMEA protocol.
  • Find Map Features. This tool allows users to search for features in any of the data layers on the map. For example, a user could enter the string ATTLEBORO and return all records that contain a reference to the town of Attleboro.
  • Map Query Tools. AreaNav provides two methods for getting more information about a data layer. Users can either receive information on all map layers in a particular location via the Information Tool or they can 'mouse over' a feature and display a preset field when with the Map Tips function.
  • Multiple raster images are supported including Color Orthophotos, USGS Topographic Quadrangles and NOAA Charts.

GIS stands for Geographic Information System and briefly, refers to a combination of computer programming and data which allows one to view, manipulate and attach information to a series of map layers representing different subjects or themes. The core picture of a GIS is a series of stacked maps where one can easily juxtapose available information for a given area.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and refers to a satellite system which, with the appropriate receivers, allows one to locate oneself geographically, frequently with an accuracy of a few meters.
