WEAP Pilot Study in the Town of Sharon
The Stockholm Environment Institute’s Water Evaluation and Planning (“WEAP”) system was designed to provide a framework and a methodology for holistic, comprehensive analysis of water resources management scenarios. For this project, the WEAP system was augmented to include enhanced stormwater routing abilities and then demonstrated in the Town of Sharon, where detailed environmental economic estimates were also researched. The town investigated the environmental and economic costs and benefits of the following scenarios:
- Impacts on water supply, runoff and wastewater from proposed high density developments and continued commercial and residential growth.
- Possible use of emergency water supply from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority.
- The use of stormwater harvesting to facilitate groundwater recharge into the aquifer used for water supply.
- Replacing the Cedar Swamp drainage ditch by a culvert to restore the more natural ground water elevations
