River Continuity

Project Name: Tower Brook Culvert Retrofit, Chesterfield

Site Location and Description:
Tower Brook is a high quality cold water tributary to the East Branch of the Westfield River, supporting habitat for Atlantic Salmon and resident cold water species such as brook trout. The project work occurred on the culvert as the stream passed underneath Cummington Road. The outlet to the culvert had been perched by about a foot with low flow depth through the culvert. The culvert is a corrugated metal pipe with no natural substrate and the length (60 feet) made passage through the culvert difficult. In June the culvert was retrofitted by raising the height of the downstream riffle, which raised the tail water pool and backed water into the culvert to match water levels. A sediment retention sill structure was installed in the culvert to hold material and aid fish and wildlife with passage.

Subwatershed Problems: Proposed Solutions:
Corrugated metal pipe culvert is perched approximately 1 foot above downstream pool Retrofit site by building up downstream riffle to reconnect stream through the culvert and install sediment retention sills to help with passage along bottom of culvert.
Old stone wall upstream of culvert reducing passage No action- wall is deteriorating

Community Involvement:
Riverways has worked with the conservation commission during the planning stages of the project. Local Trout Unlimited volunteers helped with planting at the site during construction.

Status:
Construction was completed in June 2005 on the crossing retrofit. Volunteers are continuing to water plants at the site.
