As a personal income taxpayer, you have a number of options to choose from when filing your Massachusetts state taxes. The quickest way to receive your refund is to file electronically.  Refunds are generally received within two weeks when you file electronically, rather than six weeks or more when you file on paper.

Massachusetts joined the FreeFile Alliance to increase free tax filing options for the Commonwealth’s taxpayers. Several participating tax preparation vendors listed below have already agreed to offer free filing options for qualifying Massachusetts taxpayers for 2016 tax returns.

There are also multiple locations throughout Massachusetts where you can get free tax advise and help in preparing your federal and state returns. Find an IRS-approved Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in your neighborhood.

For senior taxpayers, the AARP Foundation's Tax Aid Program also provides free tax preparation services.

Find a Paid Preparer

Many taxpayers opt to hire a paid tax preparer, such as a CPA or an Enrolled Agent, to prepare and submit their returns. This can be especially helpful for taxpayers with more complicated returns. The IRS provides a simple online tool to help you find a paid preparer in your community. Here are some tips on choosing a tax preparer. Remember, even if your return is prepared by someone else, you are legally responsible for what’s on it.
