The goal of Massachusetts health care reform, which was passed into law in 2006, is to make quality, affordable health care available to every resident. To achieve this, employers, health insurers, state government and the health care community are working together in an unprecedented effort to expand the choices available to uninsured individuals. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a national health reform law that seeks to achieve many of the same goals that we’ve set in Massachusetts in terms of trying to expand health insurance access to as many people as possible.

The Affordable Care Act places certain responsibilities on employers to ensure that health insurance is accessible to as many individuals as possible. Massachusetts’ own health reform law had also included a number of policies that affected employers. However, many of these policies have been updated or aligned in order to ensure that Massachusetts businesses are not subject to duplicative requirements.
