Although taxes may be inevitable, paying them should be as hassle-free as possible. Here are a few tips, and a list of major tax changes, to help make filing your Massachusetts taxes this year as stress-free as possible.
  • Gather your records in advance. Make sure you have all the records you'll need -- including W-2s, 1099s, and K-1s before you begin. Each year, many taxpayers end up amending returns because they filed prior to receiving all employment and income statements.
  • Take a look at the tax changes that may affect you this year. Every year, new laws are passed that affect Massachusetts taxpayers. Take a moment to read this tax change summary for tax year 2011.
  • Make sure you have all the information needed for you, your spouse and any dependents. You need to have a Social Security number or a tax identification number for each individual listed on your return. Also be sure to verify all bank routing information to ensure that your refund is properly deposited.
  • E-file. There are a number of E-file options available to taxpayers. Be sure to check out DOR's free WebFile program (starts January 18, 2012) before you begin. It's easy to use and makes filing a snap. You can also e-file from your home computer using a commercial software package. If you are one of the many taxpayers that use a tax professional, make sure you choose one that offers e-filing. Depending on your income, you may be able to file both your Federal and State taxes free through the IRS Free File program. To see if you qualify, visit the IRS at www.irs.gov.

If you file a paper return:

  • Double-check your math. Simple arithmetic errors for paper filers are a common reason for delays in getting your refund.
  • Use proper forms. To ensure proper crediting of payments always include Form PV pdf format of Form PV 2011 when submitting paper checks.
  • Sign your return. The lack of signatures continues to be the largest reason for rejected paper returns. If you are filing jointly, make sure your spouse also signs the return.
