Founders of 25 Proposed Charter Schools Invited To Submit Full Applications

MALDEN - Founders of 25 of the 42 proposed charter schools this year have been invited to move to the next stage of the state's charter school application process and submit a final application.

Governor Deval Patrick in January signed the Achievement Gap Act of 2010 which doubled the spending cap on charter schools in the state's lowest performing districts. This was the first increase on the charter school cap since 1997 and yielded the biggest and most competitive field of prospective charter schools since that cap lift in 1997. The approved cap lift includes a gradual increase from the current 9% to 12% in this first year before eventually reaching the full 18%.

Final applications are due on November 8, 2010. The final application process includes a rigorous review of the written final application by a review team, an interview of the applicant group by the Charter School Office, public hearings in the areas where schools are proposed to be located, and a review of any public comments offered to the Department.

The proposed schools invited to submit full applications are:
