The Special Commission on School District Collaboration and Regionalization will hold a public hearing on Friday, May 6 from 10:00 - 12:00 at Worcester Technical High School located on 1 Skyline Drive in Worcester.
Pursuant to Chapter 188 of the Acts of 2010, the commission's purpose is to examine efficient and effective strategies to implement school district collaboration and regionalization and to make recommendations on model approaches regarding collaboration and regionalization. The law also requires the commission to issue a final report to the legislature on the results of its investigation and its recommendations, if any, together with drafts of legislation necessary to carry out such recommendations.
The commission has been meeting bi-monthly since December 2010 and has scheduled this public hearing for the purpose of receiving input from interested parties who wish to recommend effective strategies to facilitate the implementation of school district collaboration and regionalization. In particular, the commission would like to receive testimony concerning:
The commission is especially interested in hearing from existing regional school districts, education collaboratives, and school districts and communities that have explored regionalization or collaboration in the past and/or have participated in the regional school district planning process.
- model approaches for collaboration and regionalization;
- changes to the current laws or regulations that would facilitate the implementation of existing and future regional school district agreements and collaborative arrangements;
- current challenges and obstacles surrounding efforts to regionalize or collaborate; and
- other issues regarding the topics listed in the legislative charge to the commission, outlined in section 72 of Chapter 188 of the Acts of 2010 .
Due to the limited time frame of the hearing, the number of persons providing oral testimony and the length of such testimony will be limited to three minutes per person.
