The following license types and general requirements are for Teacher licenses only. Administrator, Teacher Specialist, and Professional Support Personnel licenses have their own specific types and general requirements.


Temporary License:

Validity:

  • Valid for one (1) calendar year
  • Cannot be extended or renewed

General requirements – appropriate for an experienced teacher from out-of-state who:

  • Has been employed in another state under a valid license or certificate comparable to a Massachusetts initial license for at least three (3) years
  • Has not passed all of, or has not failed any of, the required MTEL tests.

Preliminary License:

Validity:

  • Valid for five years of employment
  • Cannot be extended or renewed

General requirements – appropriate for a person who:


Initial License:

Validity:

  • Valid for five (5) years of employment
  • Can be extended once for an additional five years

General Requirements – appropriate for a person who:

  • Has a Bachelor’s degree*
  • Has passed all required MTEL tests Holds the SEI endorsement (core academic teacher, principal/assistant principal, or supervisor/director only)
  • Has completed one of the following:
    • An approved educator preparation program in Massachusetts OR
    • For out of state applicants:
      • Holds a valid/comparable license from another state and has completed three (3) years of employment out of the last seven (7) years under the valid license from that state/jurisdiction***, OR
      • Completed an approved educator preparation program**, OR
      • Possession a regional credential applicable to the license sought, OR
      • Has completed an educator preparation program comparable to the license sought sponsored by a college or university outside of Massachusetts that has been accredited by CAEP, TEAC, or NCATE

Professional License:

Validity:

  • Valid for five (5) calendar years
  • Renewable every five (5) years thereafter

General Requirements – appropriate for a person who:

  • Holds an Initial license in the same field as the Professional license sought;
  • Has been employed under the Initial license for at least three (3) years and completed an induction and mentoring program
  • Holds a master’s/advanced degree in academic discipline appropriate to the license sought, OR
    • Has completed an approved program for the professional license sought, OR
    • Has completed a program leading to eligibility for master teacher status (NBPTS), OR
    • Has completed a master’s/advanced degree that is not in the academic discipline appropriate to the license sought, 12 credits of graduate level courses in subject matter knowledge, or pedagogy based on the subject matter knowledge of the professional license sought

*Was your Bachelors degree obtained in a country other than the United States?

Applicants seeking licensure on the basis of foreign (non-U.S.) coursework and/or diplomas must provide the Office of Educator Licensure with a detailed equivalency report or course-by-course evaluation of any college-level credit completed

*Did you get your Bachelors and/or Masters degree from a DESE recognized accrediting organization?

To find out if your College or University is accredited by any of the DESE recognized organizations you can contact your institution directly or conduct a search yourself using the databases of the national accrediting organizations that are recognized by DESE.

** Are you an applicant who has completed an approved educator preparation program?

In Massachusetts: Your approved educator preparation program provider will endorse you electronically, and we will receive your electronic endorsement via ELAR.

In another state: If seeking an Initial stage license through the completion of an approved educator preparation program, you must have your approved educator preparation program provider (college, university, etc.) and complete the Out-of-state Reciprocal Educator Preparation Program Verification Form pdf format of Out-of-State Approved Program Verification Form
