MDAR advocates the public to absorb and educate themselves on the diversity of agriculture and its impact on the Massachusetts economy. MDAR supports and provides guidelines for all agricultural fairs in the Commonwealth.The Department also works with and supports all fairs and youth organizations to increase agricultural development and education.
MDAR manages the Massachusetts Exposition Building in West Springfield, inspects fairs, conducts workshops, seminars, and training sessions, and publishes the annual Massachusetts Agricultural Fairs Directory
Agricultural Fairs Judging Training
The Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR) is pleased to offer an Agricultural Fair Judging Training to be held in W. Springfield on Saturday, February 27th. In order to be a Certified Judge for Fruits, Vegetables, Canning and Community/ Grange Exhibits, a judge candidate needs to attend an instructional training as well as take a test based on the information presented at the instructional training.
The information covered will be based on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Agricultural Fairs Blue Book. To become a Class One Certified Judge, the judge candidate will be required to pass the test with a score of 80% or higher. To become a Class Two Certified Judge, the judge candidate will be required to pass the test with a score of 80% or higher as well as mentor a Massachusetts Certified Agricultural Fair Judge(s) to at least three (3) agricultural fairs held in Massachusetts within 18 month from the date of passing the test.

Saturday, February 27, Young Building conference room at the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds, 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield. No snow date

8:30 am - 10:00: Instructional Training for Certification Test
10:00 am -10:15: Break
10:15 am -11:45: Instructional Training for Certification Test
11:45 am -12:15 pm: Lunch Break - Lunch is not provided; plan to bring your own or money to order pizza.
12:15 pm -1:45: Certification Test
2:00 pm -2:45: Animal Health Rules and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) presented by DAR, Division of Animal Health.
3:00 pm- Adjourn
