Project Background and Scope
The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is conducting this study to develop short- and long-term recommendations for the improvement of Mount Auburn Street and portions of the adjoining roadways. The objectives of the project are to identify improvements to create safe and welcoming conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians, particularly between the Charles River and abutting neighborhoods, improve operations for transit riders, and maintain vehicular access, particularly to local businesses and Mount Auburn Hospital. The study area includes the Mount Auburn Street corridor, from Belmont Street in Watertown to Traill Street in Cambridge, including the Parkway Corridor (Fresh Pond Parkway/Greenough Boulevard) from Huron Avenue to the Eliot Bridge.
Mount Auburn Street between Belmont Street and Fresh Pond Parkway has two travel lanes in each direction and carries approximately 19,000 vehicles per day. Fresh Pond Parkway has two travel lanes in each direction north of Mount Auburn Street and carries approximately 34,000 vehicles per day. The 71 and 73 MBTA bus routes carry 12,000 weekday daily riders, representing as much as one-third of total people traveling though the corridor, many of whom also walk or bike to access the service. Mount Auburn Street and Fresh Pond Parkway both represent gaps in Cambridge’s current bike network.
Over the course of 2016, this study aims to
- Improve travel time and reliability of MBTA Bus Routes 71 (Watertown Square – Harvard Station) and 73 (Waverley Square – Harvard Station)
- Improve safety of key intersections along the corridor, particularly Fresh Pond Parkway at Mount Auburn Street, Brattle at Mount Auburn Street, and Greenough Boulevard and Fresh Pond Parkway at Memorial Drive
- Improve pedestrian and bike networks within the study area and to regional resources
- Assess feasibility and impact of adding bike facilities on Mount Auburn Street
- Enhance access to the Charles River.
Howard Stein Hudson (HSH) is leading the project team that is assisting with the Mount Auburn Street Corridor Study. HSH has over 28 years’ experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, civil engineering, and public involvement. Joining HSH are Kittelson Associates, Crosby | Schlessinger | Smallridge, Fort Hill Companies, and Bryant Associates.
A stakeholder group assembled by DCR will help the Department and consultant team work through the many details associated with the project and, with local knowledge, guide the agency in its effort to make the best possible decisions regarding solutions for the improvement of Mount Auburn Street. Stakeholder group meetings will take place in parallel and in concert with forthcoming public meetings and other lines of outreach seeking input from the public at-large. Over the course of the year, DCR will hold pop up sessions in the neighborhood and use a web-mapping tool to obtain further public comment on the study area.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation is also committed to bringing the community-at-large into the design process.
