A. Anyone 12-17 years old who has completed a state basic hunter education can participate.
A. You only need to bring comfortable clothes and snacks. For the actual hunt, camouflage clothes for the hunt are preferred. Be sure to avoid wearing any red, white, or blue; since these are colors of a male turkey. You can bring your own firearm, or your club/mentor may be able to supply one for you.
A. If you are 12-14 years old, you will need to have in your possession your hunter education card, your youth turkey hunt permit and tags supplied by the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MDFW).
If you are 15-17 years old, you must have a current hunting license with turkey tags/permit, FID card, and youth turkey completion certificate on your turkey permit from DFW allowing you to hunt on the youth turkey hunt day.
A. You will learn the important aspects of turkey hunting. This will be done by some classroom teaching, but most of the instruction will be in the field going through scenarios of a hunt and also on the range where you will get to shoot your firearm.
A. This will be up to your mentors and your sportsmen's club. You will be with your friends during the pre-hunt workshop.
Q. Can I participate only in the pre-hunt workshop?
A. Yes. Please be sure to inform your sportsmen club that you do not plan on attending the hunt, and only wish to participate in the pre-hunt workshop.
Q. Can I participate only in the hunt and skip the pre-hunt workshop?
A. No. You must attend and successfully complete the pre-hunt workshop to earn a certificate of completion. This way, DFW can issue you a permit and/or tag to hunt on the special youth day hunt.
If you have already attended and participated in a pre-hunt workshop in a prior year then you do not have to attend the workshop again. In this case you can participate only in the hunt, but you will need to fill out a past participant youth turkey hunt form and mail to the Young Adult Turkey Hunt Coordinator, Astrid Huseby, at DFW Field Headquarters to acquire your turkey permit for the current year. You will need your past certificate number accessible to fill out the form properly.
Q. What is the date of the youth turkey hunt?
A. The hunt is always scheduled for the Saturday prior to the last Monday in April.
Q. What happens if I harvest a wild turkey on the youth day?
A. Just as in the regular turkey season, youth have 48 hours to check in their bird either at a physical check station or online with the MassFishHunt system.
