The links to the SAFIS application in the email notification with my account information were blocked. Can you provide me with an unblocked link?
The original email notifications were generated in an older version of Microsoft Word which for some reason blocked the links in the documents for security purposes. Here are the updated links:

When I enter my username and password I get the message “invalid credentials”. Is my username and/or password correct?
It’s possible the username and/or password we provided is not correct, but to be sure, try copy and pasting the username and password into the login boxes – this will ensure that both values are entered correctly. If that does not work, click the "Forgot Password?' link on the login page and enter the necessary information to reset your password. Do I have to enter a negative report for each day I don’t fish?
No. You only have to enter a negative report if you don’t fish under the authority of your commercial permit for an entire calendar month. In that case you would enter a negative report for the date range of the entire month (ie 1/1/2010 through 1/31/2010).
Once I enter a negative report how do I know it has been sent/saved?
The transaction has been sent/saved once you click on the save button. You will also see at the top of the page a message saying “Your negative report has been saved.” The dates will also be listed to the left of the calendar, and will be colored green in the calendar as well.
How do I delete a negative report?
Check the box next to the report date and click the red delete button. If you’d like to delete all negative reports, check the box in the header next to the header label “Report Date”, and click the red delete button. Be careful, this may delete negative reports for previous year(s) as well.
What are the Favorites for?
The favorites section allows you to store certain information, such as vessel, port of landing, gear type, area fished, species harvested, dealer sold to, which are the same from trip to trip. This way you do not need to enter this information every time you create a trip. Setting up and configuring your favorites will save a significant amount of time when entering your trips.
When I click the option to “Select All Vessels” to search for my vessel, a window appears briefly but then disappears. Why can’t I search for my vessel? The same thing happens when I search for dealers.
The vessel and dealer search lists come up in a pop-up window. It is likely that you have a pop-up blocker enabled in your browser. Try disabling the pop-up blocker for the SAFIS website in your browser and try again.
I fish using a boat but I can’t find it when I search the vessel list. What should I do for vessel information?
You should use the “Unkown” vessel that has a corresponding registration number of MS9999. It is the first vessel in the list. The reason your vessel isn’t in the vessel list is that it’s probably not a vessel you’ve listed on your MA commercial permit. If your vessel isn’t in our database, then there’s no way for us to add it to the SAFIS database. If the vessel on your permit is not in the vessel pick list, please let us know and we will add it.
What should I put in for the “Waters Fished” value?
If you are fishing in state waters, select STATE WATERS INSHORE. If you have fishing outside of state waters, select FEDERAL WATERS EEZ.
I notice there are two different reporting area types in the list of “Local Areas”. What is the difference?
All MA reporting areas start with “MA”. If this is followed by a number, then it is a statistical reporting area, of which there are 25. These areas should be used for all species except shellfish. A map of these areas can be found on our website at:
If the area is followed by a letter (e.g. BB1), this is a designated shellfish growing area. These areas should be used for reporting commercial shellfishing trips only. Growing area maps can be found on our website at:
What is the “LMA” field?
LMA stands for Lobster Management Area. Only enter this value if you are harvesting lobsters.
What is the “Trip Gear Quantity” field?
This indicates the number of gear used or fished during the trip. For example, you hauled 200 traps that trip, or 20 gillnets, or you used 3 fishing rods or 1 rake. These are all values you would enter into this field.
What is the “Total # Gear in Water” field and how does it differ from “Trip Gear Quantity”?
This indicates the maximum number of gear fishing at that time. If you have 500 traps in the water but only haul 200, then you would enter 500 in the “Total # Gear in Water” and 200 in “Trip Gear Quantity”. If you used a maximum of 3 fishing rods on a particular trip, then you would enter 3 in both fields.
How do I enter a trip where I fish in two areas?
You need to create two separate lines in the EFFORT section, with each area and the amount of gear listed separately on each line. You will also need to separate your catch by these two efforts. The “Effort #” in the EFFORT section must match the “Effort #” in the CATCH section.
How do I delete an effort?
Check the box at the beginning of the row you wish to delete (next to the “Effort #”) and click the red delete effort button.
If I have multiple efforts stored in my favorites, but only need to use one of the efforts to enter a particular trip, do I need to delete the other effort(s) before I save that trip?
Yes, you must delete any efforts that you are not using when entering a trip. To delete an effort, click the check box next to unneeded effort and click on the red “Delete Effort” button.
If I have several species stored in my favorites, but only harvest one during a commercial trip, do I need to delete the other species before I save that trip?
No, just leave the “reporting quantity” blank for the species not harvested, and they will not be included when saving and committing the trip.
How do I delete a catch?
Check the box at the beginning of the row you wish to delete, and click the red Delete Catch button.
The dealer pick list only goes up through the "C's", my dealer's name starts with the letter "T". How do I find the dealer I sold to?
The pick list for the dealers is only a sub-set of the total list. If your dealer doesn't appear initially, use the search function to find it. NOTE, when searching, try entering only the first few letters of the dealer's name or the dealer's permit number. If you try to spell it in its entirety, there's a good possibility it may not match the name stored in the database. If you still can't find your dealer, let us know, and we will help identify it.
I have a Retail Boat Permit (Live Lobster Only) and a Coastal Lobster Permit. Do I have to submit dealer reports in addition to my trip-level reports?
No. Record all of your landings on your trip-level report but be sure to indicate yourself as the dealer on any transactions where you are acting as the dealer under the authority of your Retail Boat Permit.
