The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and the Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game, Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) extend an invitation to participate in a working meeting on Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) Management Program for 2014 and its potential impact on the Massachusetts oyster industry.
These working meetings follow listening sessions that DPH and DMF convened in January 2014. At the meeting, state officials and industry representatives will provide updates from the recent Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC) and then discuss potential management strategies that may be considered in the Vp Control Plan for 2014. Input from these working meetings will be considered in development of the Vp Control Plan for 2014.
Summer 2013 was the first year harvest areas in Massachusetts were closed due to a Vp outbreak. The outbreak and subsequent closures had significant health and economic impacts. To enhance stakeholder engagement in developing the 2014 Vp Management Program, DPH and DMF are continuing to meet with industry to gather information to better inform regulatory policy. Later in spring 2014, DPH and DMF will release an enhanced Vp Control Plan for 2014 and again convene forums with industry stakeholders to review and discuss the finalized management protocol.
DPH and DMF welcome further feedback from oyster harvesters as we craft the 2014 Control Plan. Stakeholders are encouraged to attend these February meetings, as it is the last public forum in advance of development of the Vp Control Plan for 2014.
