On Wednesday, November 30, 2011 the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s (ASMFC) Northern Shrimp Section (Section) approved management measures for the 2011/2012 northern shrimp fishery. The total allowable catch (TAC) for the 2011/2012 fishery was set at 2,000 metric tons. The trawl fishery will open on January 2, 2012 with landing days on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and days-out on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Vessels may only land once a day on a landing day and the possession or landing of northern shrimp by a harvester on a day-out is prohibited. The fishery will close when landings are projected to reach 95% of the TAC (1,900 mt). The Section will meet again on January 19, 2012 and may at this time modify management options based on harvest data. For more information, please visit www.asmfc.org.
The Division of Marine Fisheries (MarineFisheries) is accepting comments pertaining to commercial northern shrimp landing days (as approved by the Section). Comments will be accepted until Monday, December 19, 2011 at 5:00 PM. Following the comment period the Marine Fisheries Advisory Commission (MFAC) will vote by fax poll to approve the proposed landing days.
Pending MFAC approval, the commercial northern shrimp fishery will open on January 2, 2012 with above specified landing days.
