Consistent with recent federal action, the requirements of the interstate plan, and with state regulations ( 322 CMR 9.00), the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has issued a quota closure notice to close the Atlantic sea herring fishery in Management Area 1B effective 0001 hours on May 24, 2014. This closure shall be in effect from May 24, 2014 through December 31, 2014 and affects any vessel registered under the laws of the Commonwealth.
Any vessel currently fishing in Management Area 1B may complete its trip, and if they enter port before 0001 hours on May 24, 2014, they are lawfully allowed to land and sell all sea herring taken during that trip. During the closure vessels may not fish for, catch, possess or land more than 2,000 pounds of sea herring in or from Management 1B. However, vessels may continue to retain and land an incidental catch of Atlantic herring from Management Area 1B, provided it does not exceed 2,000 lbs per day or trip, whichever is longer.
