The Director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (MarineFisheries) is projecting that 100% of the Management Area 1A sea herring total allowable catch (TAC) for the June 1 – September 30 period (Trimester 2) will be landed by the end of the day on Sunday, September 8, 2013. Accordingly, the Management Area 1A Atlantic sea herring fishery will close effective 12:01 AM on Monday, September 9, 2013 [322 CMR 9.05(1)(a)]. This closure will remain in effect through September 30, 2013. During the duration of this quota closure, it shall be unlawful for commercial fishing vessels to possess or land more than 2,000 lbs of sea herring taken from Management Area 1A [322 CMR 9.05(3)] during any commercial fishing trip or 24-hour day, whichever period is longer.
Beginning October 1, 2013 Management Area 1A can re-open to directed Atlantic sea herring fishing effort and commercial fishing vessels may be authorized to land sea herring in excess of 2,000 lbs. In the coming weeks, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Atlantic Sea Herring Section - comprised of the states of Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire - will meet to determine days-out specifications for the Management Area 1A fishery during the period of October 1 – December 31 (Trimester 3). An announcement of the days-out specifications for this period will follow this meeting.
