The Period 2 commercial summer flounder fishery opens today, April 23, 2013. From April 23 to June 9 commercial fishermen using nets or longlines may possess and land up to 100 pounds of fluke once per day seven days per week; commercial fishermen using other gears, such as handlines and rod and reel, are prohibited from possessing or landing fluke until June 10, 2013.
Beginning on June 10, 2013 and continuing until the 2013 Massachusetts’ commercial fluke quota is taken commercial fishermen using nets may possess and land up to 300 pounds of fluke per day from Sunday through Thursday and commercial fishermen using hook and line gear may possess and land up to 200 pounds of fluke per day from Sunday through Thursday.
Commercial trip limits for quota managed species, such as fluke, apply to the vessel regardless of how many commercial permit holders are aboard.
The Period 1 commercial fishery for summer flounder closed yesterday, April 22, 2013. Commercial fishermen that have been fishing under the 500 pound Period 1 daily trip limit or the Letter of Authorization to participate in the Period 1 Commercial Fluke Weekly Trip Limit Experimental Fishery must now adhere to the Period 2 commercial fishing limits described above.
