In 2014, a study was initiated to quantify the regional seasonal population of white sharks in Massachusetts waters. With funding and logistical support from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, annual surveys were conducted from mid-June through October off the southern coast of Cape Cod in 2014 and 2015. In 2014, a total of 68 individual white sharks (43 males, 25 females) were identified and 18 were tagged with acoustic transmitters. In 2015, this number jumped to 141 white sharks (74 males, 59 females) and 24 were tagged. Over the course of the summer and fall, most of the tagged white sharks were detected by the Division acoustic array off Cape Cod as well as by the Atlantic Cooperative Telemetry Network along the east coast of the US. This study is part of the PhD research being conducted by SMAST Student Megan Winton.
