The Division of Marine Fisheries has been hosting the Massachusetts Recreational Saltwater Fishing Derby for over 30 years. In 1983, the Division took over what was once the Governor’s Cup from the then Division of Tourism (now the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism). In 2009, the Derby expanded; a Catch-and-Release Derby now compliments the original Weigh-In Derby.
Both the Catch-and-Release and Weigh-In Derbies are annual events, running from January 1 through November 30, and are free to enter. Each Derby has its own set of rules (see here file size 3MB) and target species. Click below to learn more about each Derby. Click here to see photos of past Derby winners.
New in 2009, the Division of Marine Fisheries added a catch and release category to our longstanding and popular Massachusetts Saltwater Fishing Derby. While traditionally the derby has required the harvest and weigh-in of fish, this new format will allow catch and release oriented anglers a chance to showcase their angling skills too.
Each year, January 1 through November 30, MarineFisheries conducts the Massachusetts Saltwater Fishing Derby. This is a free derby, meaning no entry fees. Fish entered must be caught by hook and line and measured and weighed at a MarineFisheries-certified official weigh station.
