Air Plan Application

If you install a boiler:

  • Rated at 3 million British Thermal Units (Btu) per hour or more; 
  • Fired by distillate fuel oil, natural gas/propane, residual fuel oil, solid fuel, landfill gas, digester gas or used oil; and
  • Your facility is subject to federal Operating Permit requirements.

You may be required to submit a pre-construction plan application to the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). See Air Plan Applications for additional information.

Alternative: Compliance Certification

If you install a boiler:

  • Rated at between 10 million and 40 million Btu per hour;
  • Fired by natural gas or ultra-low sulfur distillate oil;
  • Installed after September 14, 2001; and
  • Your facility is not subject to federal   Operating Permit requirements.

You must certify to MassDEP that you are in compliance with all applicable environmental requirements before installation and startup. See the Compliance Certification forms and instructions on this web page, below.

Alternative for a Temporary Boiler: Permit by Rule
