Many refrigeration systems, including most commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems, contain greenhouse gases (GHGs) that contribute to climate change. These gases - including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) - leak from equipment over time.

The Massachusetts Clean Energy and Climate Plan for 2020 includes a policy intended to reduce GHG refrigerant leaks. This policy could affect refrigeration equipment servicers, refrigerant suppliers, and facilities with refrigeration systems that contain more than 50 pounds of refrigerant.
