Since 1992, the Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs, working in cooperation with federal Trustees, has successfully negotiated 20 Natural Resource Damages (NRD) settlements with parties responsible for injuries to natural resources from releases of oil and hazardous substances and materials. NRD settlements totaling over $63 million to fund projects to restore rivers, wetlands, and floodplains, permanently protect land for wildlife and water supplies, and create public access to and use of fresh and coastal waters. This report tells many stories of how the Commonwealth and its partners have involved the public in planning for and implementing restoration and provides highlights of projects completed or underway. A preview of future restoration efforts describes new settlements that will lead to additional projects.
