MassDEP Statement Supporting the Obama Administration's New 'Strategy to Reduce Methane Emissions'

The following is a statement from Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner David W. Cash concerning today's announcement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on a new plan to cut methane emissions from multiple sources across the nation:

"Massachusetts again applauds the Obama Administration's leadership in addressing climate change. This new Strategy to Reduce Methane Emissions shows the Administration's innovative approach to reaping economic benefits, improving the environment, protecting public safety and achieving cost savings. We look forward to working closely with our federal partners in reducing leaks from the gas distribution system, utilizing emissions from landfills before they escape as methane, and re-purposing organic materials to capture the win-win-win of producing energy from organics, decreasing waste in landfills and lowering municipalities' disposal costs."
