Financing & Incentives
- Financial & Technical Assistance for Anaerobic Digestion Projects
A matrix of grant, loan and assistance programs available to renewable energy developers who are proposing organics processing projects.
- Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) Municipal Grants
MassDEP Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRP) Municipal Grants offer funding for recycling, composting, reuse and source reduction activities that will increase diversion of municipal solid waste and household hazardous waste from disposal. MassDEP accepts applications between early April and mid June annually.
- Net Metering Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Net metering allows customers of an electric distribution company to generate their own electricity from clean energy sources in order to offset their electricity usage. Net metering can lower a customer's electricity bill by reducing the amount of electricity the customer must buy from the distribution company. Net metering also allows customers to be compensated for any electricity they generate but do not use. Learn more about net-metering from the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities.
- Green Communities
The Green Communities Division empowers the Commonwealth's cities and towns to reduce their energy use and their carbon footprint on the journey towards healthier communities and stronger economies.
- State Revolving Fund
The SRF Program provides low-interest loans to cities, towns, and other local governmental units for drinking water and wastewater-related infrastructure projects.
- MassCEC Commonwealth Organics-To-Energy
MassCEC's Organics-to-Energy program provides funding to educate businesses and communities about organics-to-energy technologies, help communities and businesses evaluate organics-to-energy projects, and support construction of facilities.
- Massachusetts Production Based Incentives
The Massachusetts Renewable Energy Portfolio Standards (RPS) provides production based incentives for anaerobic digestion. The Massachusetts Alternative Energy Portfolio Standards (APS) provides production based incentives for Combined Heat and Power, a technology that is used with anaerobic digestion to convert biogas into electricity.
- Federal Renewable Energy Production Tax Credit

Tapping the Energy Potential of Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Anaerobic Digestion and Combined Heat and Power in Massachusetts
file size 2MB
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) present an untapped source of renewable energy. When anaerobically digested, those biosolids generate biogas which may be captured and used for heat and electricity. This study provides background information and case studies of biogas production and usage at WWTPs in Massachusetts and nationally.
- AGR Division of Agricultural Conservation and Technical Assistance
Working with the Divisions of Agricultural Markets, Animal Health, and Crop Management and Inspectional Services, the Division of Agricultural Conservation and Technical Assistance (DACTA) works to advance the conservation and utilization of agricultural resources through preservation, environmental stewardship, technology, technical assistance and education in order to enhance the viability of agricultural enterprises and safeguard natural resources.
