Flood Hazard Mitigation Program

Description and Eligible Activities: Annual cost-shared grants for flood mitigation planning and projects for communities (pre-disaster mitigation program). Federal FEMA funds are passed through to the state which enters into contracts with the subgrantee, usually a city or town. Program includes Pre-Disaster Mitigation, Flood Hazard Mitigation Assistance, and Severe Repetitive Loss grant programs.

Hazard Mitigation Grant Program

Description and Eligible Activities: A post-disaster grant program where the funds are made available following a Presidential Disaster Declaration. Grants are tied to the federal rather than the state fiscal year and often have multiyear performance periods. The grants are reimbursable, cost-shared grants for natural hazard mitigation planning and projects for communities. Current grants (for March 2010 flooding) are awarded under "FEMA-1895-DR-MA," previous disaster declaration was #1813 for the January 2009 ice storm and some grants were awarded in FY11.

Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Program

Description and Eligible Activities: Allows eligible fire departments to expand their expertise, purchase tools necessary to carry out vital public safety functions and assist high risk communities in reducing problematic hazard mitigation concerns in the Wildland Urban Interface.
