The Rates and Revenue Requirements Division ("Rates Division") is responsible for providing the technical expertise the Department needs to determine the appropriate levels of revenues, rates and charges for the seven investor-owned electric companies, nine investor-owned gas companies and twenty investor owned water companies in the Commonwealth. The technical support provided by the Rates Division includes expertise in economics, finance, accounting, and public policy. The Rates Division staff assists the Department's Legal Division in developing the evidentiary record in adjudicatory proceedings concerning the rates or finances of the public natural gas, electric, and water companies doing business in Massachusetts. The Department's decisions in these proceedings are directly appealable to the Supreme Judicial Court under G.L. c. 25, § 5.
