Patrick-Murray Administration Announces Program to Promote the Use of SNAP Benefits at Farmers' Markets
The Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (DAR) and Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) will announce a joint program to increase the number of farmers markets that allow customers to use Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly called food stamps) benefits to purchase fresh, locally-grown food. State officials from the two agencies will celebrate the program, which provides $50,000 in grants to farmers markets across the Commonwealth to purchase Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) Terminals and promote the use of EBT at farmers' markets. DAR and DTA will also host a healthy cooking demonstration and tasting, and provide information about the nutritional benefits of farmers' markets.
