Patrick-Murray Administration Seeks Public Input on Commonwealth's 2020 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Goal

Eight hearings planned around the state in June

The Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) will hold eight hearings in locations across Massachusetts in advance of the Global Warming Solutions Act's January 1, 2011 deadline for EEA Secretary Ian Bowles to set a 2020 target for reducing the state's greenhouse gas emissions. The Act requires the Secretary to set a firm 2020 target between 10 and 25 percent below 1990 emission, and to develop a plan to meet that target. A technical report completed for EEA this year showed that state and federal policies now in place or anticipated have Massachusetts on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 18 percent from 1990 levels over the next decade. In April, Secretary Bowles announced that EEA would hold hearings to take public comment on a 2020 reduction target between 18 and 25 percent. EEA will also take testimony on specific reduction measures with potential for energy cost savings and job growth, and recently released a draft plan April 17, 2009 report to the Commissioner of DOER from the Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities and Energy pdf format of reporttodoerfromtueonrps-aps-.pdf
