Application Deadline for 2011 Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education Set for March 28

BOSTON - January 13, 2011 - This spring, Secretary of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Richard K. Sullivan Jr. will honor Massachusetts teachers and students who are involved in school-based programs that promote environment and energy education.

The application deadline for the 17th Annual Secretary's Awards for Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education is Monday, March 28, 2011.

"For students across the Commonwealth, this program provides an opportunity to explore local, national and global environmental and energy challenges facing residents and businesses, our cities and towns, our state and our country," said Secretary Sullivan. "I look forward to hearing what these young minds come up with to meet these challenges."

All Massachusetts schools (K-12) that offer energy and environmental education programs are eligible to apply for the Secretary's Award. In 2010, 52 programs at 43 schools and nine nonprofit organizations across the state were recognized for their work on issues including recycling, energy conservation, ocean science, wildlife conservation and alternative fuels.

The Secretary's Advisory Group on Energy and Environmental Education will review applications through mid-April. Qualified entrants are invited to attend a formal award ceremony with Secretary Sullivan at the State House later in the spring.
