Students and Environmental Officials to Take Part in a Three-Day Trout Stocking Event at Quabbin Reservoir

State officials and local students from Hardwick, Shutesbury and Petersham will help kick off the spring fishing season by releasing around 4,500 rainbow trout as part of an effort to stock 5000 fish in the reservoir this season. Quabbin Reservoir is scheduled to open for fishing season Saturday, April 16. This event is part of a program that distributes various species of trout to 500 bodies of water throughout the Commonwealth annually. This year, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife) will release more than 529,000 trout produced at state-operated hatcheries in Belchertown, Montague, Sandwich, and Sunderland. Quabbin Reservoir covers 39 square miles and holds 412 billion gallons of water that provides drinking water for more than two million people.
