![]() The State Sustainability Executive Order No. 438 highlights recycling/waste reduction as one of the top priorities of the State Sustainability Program, with the specific goal of achieving a 50% recycling rate in state government by 2010. Recognizing that many state agency facilities face similar barriers to implementing successful recycling programs, and that modifying solid waste practices to increase recycling often results in significant cost savings for the facility, EOEA contracted with several environmental consultants in fiscal year 2003 to conduct site visits at a variety of facilities. The consultants were asked to review solid waste practices at the facilities and to make specific recommendations for increasing recycling and decreasing solid waste expenditures. The final Recycling Site Visit reports that were submitted by the consultants contain some very impressive cost saving and waste reduction estimates, and also include valuable recommendations, information, and tracking tools that can be useful for all agencies and college campuses. The State Sustainability Program has posted each of these reports in full, and encourages state agencies to review the results and the recommendations, and how these ideas may be applicable to their own operations. In addition, follow-up reports on which of these recommendations will be implemented this year will be posted on the SS website in June of 2004. Please feel free to contact Ian Finlayson, State Sustainability Program Manager, for more information on the site visits or the reports. |
