2007 Index Streamflows for Massachusetts
This document explains the rationale and development of index streamflows for Massachusetts.
It presents the index streamflows that will be recommended to the Massachusetts Water Resources
Commission for adoption. The goal of the index streamflows is to represent a target of natural
flow conditions that would be expected in the absence of significant human alteration. Maintaining
a natural flow regime is recognized as a key to sustaining native aquatic species. The document
provides examples of how index streamflows may be used, alternative site-specific methods for
determining appropriate streamflows that are protective of aquatic habitat, and presents streamflow
statistics from index gages in and around Massachusetts.
