July is National Blueberry Month! Since the entire month is dedicated to blueberries, this is a great time to remind ourselves how healthy blueberries are, as well as learn about the different ways we can enjoy them. These delicious berries are low in calories and fat — helping to promote a healthy heart, and are loaded with antioxidants that help prevent cancer by repairing cells within the body. Not only are blueberries healthy for us, but they are easy to eat on the go and can be added to almost anything!
Summer is a perfect time to buy berries since they are in season. Not only are vegetables and fruit less expensive when they are in season, but they taste better too! Try something new with your blueberries. Many people eat blueberries during breakfast on top of cereal, in pancakes or muffins. Have you eaten them as a snack in yogurt or on top of a salad for a sweet punch? Try them with mixed greens, pecans, bleu cheese, and vinaigrette dressing.
Another great thing about blueberries is that they freeze well. Take advantage of their lower price while they’re in season this month. Buy them now, rinse them under cold water, pat dry with a paper towel, and seal them in airtight freezer bags or containers. You can enjoy them in cooking, baking, or smoothies in the fall or winter months. Try mixing equal parts of frozen blueberries and low-fat yogurt, and a splash of milk in the blender.
