If you have other health insurance, you can see any doctor who takes MassHealth and your other insurance.

If you are aged 65 or older and have MassHealth only, you can choose any doctor that accepts MassHealth.

If you are aged 65 or older, and have volunteered to join a senior care organization (SCO), the SCO will deliver all of your primary care and will authorize and arrange all of your covered services.

Generally, if you are under age 65 and you are approved for MassHealth Standard, Family Assistance, or Basic and do not have other health insurance, you must choose a doctor and a health plan through MassHealth. If you are under age 65 and approved for Essential and do not have other health insurance, you must choose a doctor through MassHealth. For Essential and Basic members, you do not get benefits until you tell MassHealth what your choice is. For Standard and Family Assistance members without health insurance, you get coverage before you enroll in a health plan, but you are still required to enroll.

Soon after we tell you that you can get MassHealth, we will send you information in an enrollment package that explains choices you have and tells you how to enroll. If you are eligible for CommonHealth, you may enroll in a health plan through MassHealth but you do not have to. If you are eligible for MassHealth Limited or Prenatal, or you are eligible for another MassHealth coverage type and have other health insurance, you do not have to enroll in another health plan through MassHealth.

Choosing a health plan and doctor for yourself and your family is an important decision. If you need help making this decision, you can call the toll-free telephone number that is in the enrollment package, and talk to a Health Benefits Advisor. The Health Benefits Advisor is trained to help you make the choice that is best for you and your family.

If you want to change your health plan, call the MassHealth Customer Service Center. If you want to change doctors within your health plan, you should call the health plan's Member Services department.
