MassHealth Previous ICD-10 Updates DATE August 24, 2012 Update HHS Adopts the One-Year Delay August 24, 2012, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it officially adopted the proposed one-year delay of the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition, Clinical Modification/Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-CM/PCS). All “covered entities”—as defined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)—are required to adopt ICD-10 codes by October 1, 2014. Although this change in the compliance date will give providers and other covered entities more time to prepare and fully test their systems, HHS is urging covered entities to continue with their current implementation preparation activities. Date April 20, 2012 Update HHS Announces Intent to Delay the ICD-10 Implementation Date On April 9, 2012, HHS announced that it intends to delay the ICD-10 implementation date by one year. This would move the implementation date from October 1, 2013, to October 1, 2014. HHS issued a Request For Comment (RFC) on this proposal in the Proposed Rule for the Adoption of a Standard for a Unique Health Plan Identifier (HPID) on April 17, 2012.
