The Office of Local and Regional Health (OLRH) provides leadership in collaboration with internal and external public health stakeholders to build the capacity of Massachusetts local boards of health (BOH) to meet their legal responsibilities to protect the health of their communities and to deliver the ten essential public health services. The OLRH partners with the Massachusetts Coalition for Local Public Health, other external stakeholders, and an intra-agency local public health working group to ensure that its resources are directed to strategic priorities. Those priorities include:

  • Supporting local public health workforce development in cooperation with academic partners, professional associations, and other external stakeholders
  • Providing technical assistance for improved local public health performance and service delivery including the development of shared services arrangements/public health districts that promote effectiveness and efficiency
  • Responding to the need for regular, timely communication of news, information, and data from the Department to local public health
  • Developing resources for local public health in response to identified needs including those that promote the role of local public health
  • Maintaining a culture of internal collaboration and communication in support of local public health throughout the Department
  • Promoting local public health participation with community partners for community health improvement with particular attention to achieving health equity and social justice
