A strong partnership between state and local health is critical for addressing the many challenges of public health in the 21st century. In October 2013, DPH Commissioner Cheryl Bartlett announced the formation of a new Office of Local and Regional Health (OLRH). This new Office will provide a coordinated system to support public health planning at the local level, helping to connect our local partners with DPH programs, services and resources which can be of assistance with their efforts.
DPH Associate Commissioner Suzanne Condon will provide strategic oversight of the new Office of Local and Regional Health, and day-to-day activities of the OLRH administrative staff will be managed by OLRH Director Jana Ferguson. The five current managers of DPH’s Regional Offices will report to the OLRH Director and carry out a range of activities targeted at supporting our local health partners.
At the outset, DPH will be working with the Coalition for Local Public Health (CLPH) and other partners to assess the needs of local boards of health and develop priorities for the OLRH. CLPH is comprised of the five statewide public health professional associations, including the Mass. Health Officers Association, Mass. Association of Health Boards, Mass. Association of Public Health Nurses, Mass. Environmental Health Association, and Mass. Public Health Association.
