Although most sports injuries are preventable, participation in sports is a major cause of serious injury among youth. Each year three to five million children seek treatment in hospital emergency rooms because of sports injuries. About 200,000 of these cases are children ages 14 and younger with playground-related injuries. Many more children are treated by family physicians.

Sports activities are the second most frequent cause of injury for both male and female adolescents. Playground injuries are the leading cause of injuries to students 5-14 in the school environment. It is estimated that more than 40 percent of playground injuries are related to inadequate supervision.
