In 2012, Malden is Moving! became a Mass in Motion Community. Working with local partners, it created a Safe Routes to School Planning Committee and developed a working relationship with the MassDOT Safe Routes coordinator. Accomplishments in the initial phase of the Safe Routes to School plan included a citywide meeting with Malden’s mayor and the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) to discuss Safe Routes strategies, and participation in the launch of “Walking Wednesdays.” Malden is Moving! strives to get residents to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. Malden has identified Walking routes to the Malden River, and promotes the Northern Strand Community Trail (Bike to the Sea), a walking and biking trail that also promotes physical activity. Malden is Moving! also participates in the Healthy Dining project, where local establishments apply to be recognized as a Healthy Dining Restaurant Champion by offering healthier menu options. To empower youth to make improvements in their city, Malden is Moving! launched a photovoice project with youth to improve the built environment.

In addition, Malden, served by the Melrose/Wakefield Tobacco Control Partners, receives CTG funding to implement smoke-free multi-family housing.
