Adams, North Adams, and Clarksburg make up Northern Berkshires Mass in Motion, a partner of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition. Northern Berkshires Mass in Motion was funded in 2012, and hit the ground running by undertaking several initiatives to improve the health of Northern Berkshire residents. The coalition is working towards creating conditions that encourage, nurture, and promote wellness with a particular focus on healthy eating and active living. They are working to implement Safe Routes to School, a program that provides safe ways for children to walk or bike to school. Continuing their work with schools, Northern Berkshires Mass in Motion is helping school staff implement the new state nutrition standards in schools. They are developing relationships between local farms and meal sites and food pantries to increase healthy foods available to low-income residents. In addition, Northern Berkshires Mass in Motion is working with local farmers markets to accept SNAP benefits, making fruits and vegetables more affordable to lower income residents.
