One of the oldest cities in the Commonwealth and a prominent player in Revolutionary times, Salem continues to lead the way today as a Mass in Motion community. This time the fight is against obesity through building healthier communities. Mass in Motion Salem has successfully launched several initiatives to increase biking and walking around town, including: construction of the South River Harborwalk to extend to the inner most portion of the harbor; the Bridge Street Bypass Road Bike Path; the redesign of the pedestrian mall to improve walkability; and The Salem Bike Path Extension to downtown. Also focused on increasing local produce access, Salem has stretched their summer farmer's markets into December and hopes to soon extend to April for year-round access. In addition, Mass in Motion Salem is working to connect several different Salem schools with community gardens so that they can better learn from each other.
