In 2009, Mass in Motion Springfield was awarded one of ten state-wide grants to prioritize wellness initiatives at the community level. Within the first year, Springfield created a Wellness Leadership Council comprising key policy decision makers and community stakeholders. The Springfield Wellness Leadership Council created an action plan for Springfield to strengthen policies, systems and environmental change strategies by supporting healthy eating and active living.  The plan was based on a thorough city-wide assessment and environmental scan of existing policies. Mass in Motion Springfield is currently working with corner stores as part of the Healthy Markets initiative, creating joint-use agreements with local schools, implementing the school nutrition regulations, and creating safer routes for students to walk to school. In fact, Springfield has been widely recognized for the Brightwood Elementary School’s walking school bus. Every day of the year, over 100 students walk to school together in a large group with student chaperones and the assistance of state police.
