The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) is committed to improving the health of the nation's underserved by uniting communities in need with health professionals, and supporting communities' efforts to build better systems of care. The NHSC helps medically underserved communities recruit and retain primary care clinicians, including dental and mental and behavioral health professionals.

NHSC Loan Repayment:

The NHSC offers loan repayment assistance of up to $50,000 for trained primary care physicians (MD or DO), family nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives, physician assistants, dentists, dental hygienists and certain mental health clinicians in exchange for two years serving in an approved setting in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Participants may apply for additional assistance at the conclusion of their initial commitment. NHSC Scholarship:

The scholarship program covers tuition, fees and provides a living stipend for up to four years to students enrolled in accredited medical (MD or DO), dental, dental hygienist, nurse practitioner, certified nurse midwife and physician assistant training programs. After graduation recipients are required to work one year for each year of received support as primary care providers in an approved setting located in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). NHSC Recruitment and Retention Site Applications:

The Primary Care Office offers technical assistance for sites seeking to become NHSC placement sites and when appropriate, identifying sites eligible for NHSC placement in high-need communities. The Primary Care Office is the NHSC liaison for Massachusetts and participates in the approval process by assessing new recruitment and retention sites and health professional applications.
